What's going on?
Online gambling was banned for a long time
Only physical gambling providers with a licence were allowed to offer games of chance under strict conditions. In 2012, the Supreme Court of the Netherlands confirmed again that the Netherlands could continue to prohibit online casinos.
Dutch people still gambled at illegal casinos
Many foreign online casinos continued to serve the Dutch market despite the ban. Hundreds of thousands of Dutch people could easily create accounts, deposit money (sometimes even via iDEAL), and get support from Dutch-speaking staff.
The Netherlands legalises online gambling
After the Koa Act (Wet Kansspelen op afstand) came into effect, gambling providers could apply for a licence to legally offer online games of chance in the Netherlands from 1 October 2021. This was meant to help prevent addiction and better protect consumers.
Illegal casinos held responsible
Several Dutch gamblers have successfully filed lawsuits, with judges ruling that online gambling companies must repay all losses from before 1 October 2021. These online casinos did not have a licence for the Dutch market, making the agreements with customers null and void.
